Once you purchase advanced deciduous trees, it’s important to get the planting process right.
We’ve devised a simple three-step process. For any questions about planting in a specific location or maintaining your trees, feel free to contact us.
The video and diagram below explain the process in more detail.
Step One: Dig an appropriate hole.
The hole should be the same depth as the root ball and about one and a half times wider, with 45-degree sloped sides. Keep the excavated soil to one side for backfilling.
Step Two: Carefully place the tree.
Place the tree in the center of the hole and orient the branches to fit the location. Ensure the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding ground.
Step Three: Backfill the hole.
Hold the tree in position while backfilling with soil. Compact the soil as you go. A slow-release fertilizer can be added during backfilling, placed to the sides of the root ball to promote lateral root growth.
A 50-75mm mulch layer around the tree is recommended, but keep it clear of the trunk to prevent collar rot. Extend the mulch to match the tree’s canopy width to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Further Tip
We recommend staking the tree during its first two years. Use two or three six-foot hardwood stakes, placed roughly a foot from the tree trunk and angled slightly away. Fasten the tree with a 50mm wide hessian strap in a Figure-8 pattern for added support.
