Getting the Planting Process Right for Advanced Deciduous Trees
We’ve devised a simple three-step process for planting. For further guidance, feel free to contact us.
The video and diagram below explain the process in more detail.
Step One: Dig an Appropriate Hole
Dig a hole the same depth as the root ball and about 1.5 times wider, with a 45-degree slope on the sides. Set aside the soil for backfilling.
Step Two: Carefully Place the Tree
Center the tree in the hole, positioning its branches for the best view. Ensure the root ball is flush with ground level.
Step Three: Backfill the Hole
Backfill with the excavated soil, compacting it as you go. Adding slow-release fertilizer to the sides of the root ball encourages lateral root growth. Apply a 50-75mm layer of mulch around the tree, but keep it clear from the trunk to prevent collar rot.

Further Tip
We recommend staking the tree for the first two years. Use two or three six-foot hardwood stakes, placed about a foot from the trunk and angled away for support. Fasten the tree with a 50mm wide hessian strap in a Figure-8 pattern.
