It’s been a dry start to winter across much of the state, and gardens are feeling it. If you’re wondering how to look after your trees in this weather, you’re not alone. In this article, we’ll cover winter tree care in Victoria, especially during dry conditions, and how you can help your deciduous trees thrive.
Why Winter Is Still the Best Time to Plant?

Even in dry conditions, winter is ideal for planting advanced deciduous trees because:
- Trees are dormant, so they experience less transplant shock
- Cooler weather reduces stress on roots
- Planting now gives trees time to establish before summer heat
Winter tree care Victoria starts with smart planting—so give your trees the best start by planting now.

Tree Care Tips for a Dry Victorian Winter
If the rain hasn’t arrived, here’s how you can help your trees settle in and thrive:
Soak Well at Planting
- Dry soil needs a good soak—don’t assume the cooler weather means enough moisture.
- Water the planting hole deeply before and after planting
- Check that water is soaking in, not running off
Mulch to Hold Moisture
- A layer of mulch helps lock in precious water and keep weeds down.
- Use 5–7cm of mulch around the base of the tree
- Keep mulch away from the trunk to avoid rot
Water as Needed (Yes, Even in Winter!)
- If there’s been no decent rain for a week or two, give your newly planted trees a drink.
- Water slowly and deeply to encourage strong roots
- For established trees, check soil moisture before watering
Stake if Necessary
- Winds can be harsh in open areas.
- Use two stakes and a flexible tie to support the tree
- Remove stakes after 12 months or once the tree is stable
Monitor and Adjust
- Winter conditions can vary from week to week—stay flexible.
- If we get a cold snap, hold off on pruning
- If dry weather continues, increase watering frequency
